Where Do I Live? Part 2

Here is Part 2 to the Where Do I Live? posts which deals with the apartments on campus.

campus-map

Stadium:

  • 2,3, or 4 Room Option
  • 1-2 Bathrooms
  • Fully Furnished
  • Kitchen, Living Room, and Laundry Room

These apartments are located near the football stadium across Hwy 421. Parking stickers are considered commuter. Macy Cook gives her perspective on living at Stadium.

Pros: “The best part is that it is secluded, and quiet. I have heard a lot of complaints from people who live in faculty that they have noisy neighbors. We do not have that problem here. I have enjoyed living at Stadium immensely. The apartment is spacious and extremely nice!”

Cons: ” The worst part is having to walk across 421, but luckily our parking stickers allow us to park as a commuter, so that really isn’t a problem.”

Barker:

  • 4 Floors
  • Suite and Apartment Style
  • 4 Bedrooms
  • 1 1/2 or 2 Bathrooms
  • Living Room and Kitchen
  • Fully Furnished

Barker is located near Shouse. It is either a suite style with 4 bedrooms and 1 1/2 bath. It features a kitchenette with microwave, mini fridge, and cabinet space. The apartment style have 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and full kitchen. Laundry services are on each floor instead of in each apartment. Felix Lam lives in Barker and gives some insight.

Pros: “I love being able to cook for myself and having my own personal room.”

Cons: ”Since Barker is not hall style, there is less community, and you don’t get to know as many people as you would in a dorm.”

Faculty:

  • 2 Floors
  • 3 Bedrooms
  • 2 Bathrooms
  • Fully Furnished
  • Living Room, Kitchen, Laundry Room

Faculty is located in between the traffic circles and Hwy 421. It is in a better location than Stadium; however, parking is tight. Ondrej Kralik

Pros: ”The fact that everyone has their own room, that there is a kitchen is great. Everything is just more personal.”

Cons: ”Internet is horrible. It is always in and out.”

Hopefully this helps you decide where to live.

  2. April 3: 4th Year Residents

Where Do I Live? Part 1

Monday, everyone got the lecture about housing sign-ups. It is now going to be done electronically, and preference is not given by credit hours. It is based off of how many years you have lived here. Besides all the changes, there is still one thing to decide… where do I live next year? Some of you may have it all planned out; however, some may not. If you don’t and are still in a conundrum of where you want to live on campus next year, hopefully this will help.

In this post, you can read about the upper classman dorms on campus and hear from those who have stayed there about the pros and cons. Make sure to check back later in the week, though, for apartment overviews.

Jones:

  • Female
  • 3 Floors
  • Couplet Style Bathrooms
  • Hall Style Room Arrangement

This dorm is in a great central location, being a short distance from Lundy, Marshbanks, and Academic Circle. Although, older, it is well kept and has good internet access. Emily McIntosh, has lived there for the past year and has some insight.

Pros: “I enjoy living in Jones as it is a short distance from many places. It is also great to have the window unit AC so I can adjust the room temperature as desired.”

Cons: ” The negatives of Jones are the semi-awkward room arrangements. The rooms are narrow and have little wall space. The showers are also really narrow and small.”

Powell:

  • Female
  • 3 Floors
  • Couplet Bathroom Style
  • Hall Style Room Arrangement

Powell is also centrally located; it’s right next to Jones and is attached to the Rumley Center. Hannah Joyce, an RA there, shares her thoughts on the dorm.

Pros: “For being in a dorm, I’ve never had any complaints about the space in Powell.  The residents have enough room for all of their accessories and love the adequate storage space each room provides.”

Cons: “The biggest problem in Powell is the heating system.  Don’t get me wrong, we have plenty of heat! However, the heating system is old and runs by pushing steam through the old rusty pipes which creates loud noises periodically throughout the day.”

Burkott:

  • Female
  • 3 Floors
  • Couplet Style Bathrooms
  • Hall Room Arrangements

Burkott is located near Shouse. It shares a communal entrance with McCall and Small. Sonya Phannouvong, a year long resident, gives her opinion on this dorm.

Pros: ”Burkot has large showers. You don’t feel cramped when you’re taking a shower. I also really like that it has a lobby on each floor.

Cons: ”Burkot has issues with heating, but the RAs are really good with reporting any problems to maintenance.”

McCall:

  • Male
  • 3 Floors
  • Couplet Bathroom Style
  • Suite Room Set Up

McCall is located near Shouse Dining Hall. Zach Roberson, an RA there, explains what he thinks of the dorm.

Pros: “I love the halls recreational areas, we have a lobby with a pool table an air hockey table and a ping-pong table.”

Cons: “I think location does kinda hurt it. I like that we are closer to Shouse, but the fact that it is so far from Lundy is a downfall. My Bike makes it better though.”

Sauls:

  • Male
  • 3 Floors
  • Suite Bathroom Style
  • Suite Room Arrangement

Sauls is near Shouse and is the only upper classman dorm with suite style room arrangement. Jacob Shires shares his thoughts on the residence hall.

Pros: “I like the in-suite lobbies. They are great to chill and hang out in.”

Cons: “Sharing a bathroom with 8 guys and only 2 shower heads is not the greatest thing in the world.”

Hopefully this helps you decide where to live. If you aren’t interested in a dorm than make sure to check back for apartment insights.

A Warning

You may have gotten an email today from Campus Safety about being safe walking around campus. You may also be wondering why they might have sent this. There may be a reason. Conner Capshaw, a Campbell student, has reported being attacked on March 14 on the edge of campus. He is fine, but it is a situation that should not be taken lightly. Harnett County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the alleged incident. According to Capshaw…

“Last night [March 14] I was a victim of a bad crime. I was walking towards the gas station [short stop];I was almost to the Quiznos, when an older white SUV pulled up beside me asking for directions. I could not hear them too well so I stepped a little closer, and at that point the passenger of the vehicle reached out and grabbed me. I hit him in the face and pushed back, but someone had gotten out of the back at this point and hit me in the head from behind. When I woke up, I was laying on the ground on the side of some back street with my hands taped together behind my back. My legs were taped at the ankles, and tape across my mouth. The money in my pocket was gone. Luckily I was able to break the tape from my legs and make it to a house where the rest of the restraints were removed, and I was able to call 911. So everyone be on the lookout for a vehicle fitting this description, (they were too old to be campbell students). Also, be careful at night around campus, travel in groups, and be safe. Please spread the wored and share this with your friends so that we can prevent thiis from happening again.” –Conner Capshaw

Campus Safety reported the incident as first degree kidnapping, common law robbery, and simple physical assault.

There have been other students around campus who have been approached by suspicious vehicles late at night. The person’s in the vehicle have asked questions such as “Are you lost? Do you need food?”. The point of the message is to warn everyone, that while we often feel safe, there are dangers. Be careful, walk in groups, stay in light, and report suspicious activity.

Campbell Wins Big in Watermelon Pageant

484798_10151544359499493_1335020581_nThis weekend, one of Campbell’s own was crowned North Carolina Watermelon Queen. Allyson Brake, sophomore communication major, competed in the pageant for the title.

The contest consisted of an interview, speech, casual wear, and formal wear. Allyson had to demonstrate public speaking skills, knowledge of the product and growers, and charisma.

The purpose of the Watermelon Queen is to promote and advocate for the NC Watermelon Association and the watermelon product. Allyson will be the face of  the association for a year, travelling across the state to promote the delicious fruit and those who produce it. She will also be going to several states over the next year to attend conferences and promote even more. In addition to the expense paid trips, Allyson also received a scholarship and other prizes.

“This is a completely new experience for me, and I am very excited about it. Most people know how great a watermelon tastes, but I hope to better educate them on how that watermelon gets to your table,” Allyson says.

We want to congratulate Allyson on an amazing job and are excited for her and the journey she is about to embark on.

Basketball Coach Let Go

thRobbie Laing, head men’s basketball coach, was let go this morning after being with the school since 2003. Over his 10 years here, he went 114-185, with this season seeing a 13-20.

“Laing helped transform Campbell basketball over the past decade into a team that was competitive on the court and exciting to watch,” said Bob Roller, Director of Athletics.

Campbell is looking to a new future, though. Laing said, “They want to move in a different direction, and they certainly have that prerogative,” according to a FayObserver article.

The search for a new coach has already begun. We wish Laing the best, and look to the future. Changes are certainly evident.
