Dorm Life: How to Host a Friendsgiving in Your Dorm

Sophia Pineda

Thanksgiving break is almost here, which means it’s the perfect time to celebrate with the people who got you through the semester. You don’t need a full kitchen or a big budget to pull off a Friendsgiving. All you need is your dorm, your friends, and a little creativity.

1. Make It a Potluck

Nobody wants to cook a whole turkey in a dorm. Have everyone bring one dish so the work (and cost) is split. Make a group chat sign-up so you don’t end up with five bags of chips and no main course.

2. Go No-Cook (or Microwave-Only)

Dorm kitchens are limited, so keep it simple. Rotisserie chicken, boxed mac and cheese, microwave mashed potatoes, rolls, and a store-bought pie can make a full spread with zero stress.

3. Set the Mood

Cheap decor goes a long way. Grab a tablecloth, paper plates in fall colors, mini pumpkins, and battery-operated candles (skip the real ones, your RA will thank you).

4. Start a Tradition

Go around the table and share what you’re thankful for this semester. It might feel cheesy, but it’s the part everyone remembers.

5. Add a Game

Keep the fun going after dinner with a card game, a movie, or a round of “Who in this room is most likely to…” Bonus points for a Thanksgiving-themed playlist.

6. Pack Up the Leftovers

Bring containers so everyone can take some food home. Leftovers make the perfect late-night study snack before break.
